Lewis & Clark are some of the most famous explorers in US history, so why not immerse the family in their story at the Lewis & Clark National Historical Park!
The park itself is actually make up of 12 different park sites, all located on a 40 mile stretch of that beautiful Pacific Coast. So there is a lot to see - we better get on with it!
You can visit the sites in any order that you like, but it's recommended that you start at Fort Clatsop or the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center which is located at Cape Disappointment (don't be put off by the name !)
Both of these locations off rangers, as well as gift shops and fascinating exhibits on the region, as well as the history.
Fort Clatsop is actually a replica, but it gives you a very real sense of what people experienced over 200 years ago. It even smells the same! If you visit during peak season, you might even be lucky and come across rangers demonstrating the way of life, including flintlock gun shooting, candle making and even hide tanning.
The Fort Stevens State Park once had a bustling Clatsop Indian Village, and now has miles of great bike trails that you can journey on to explore the area. There is even a historic 278 sailing vessel which ran aground all the way back in 1906 and still rests on the beach today!
If you head to Astoria Column, you can actually see the entire Lewis & Clark National Historical Park, which certainly you will be wanting your camera for! The 164 steps to the top are worth it! You can stop to look at the artwork along the way, which depicts local history from the 1790s right through the next century.
A historical, and outdoor adventure for all ages in a stunning part of the country! What more could you want!
