Formerly the Baranov Museum, the Kodiak History Museum is a historic experience before you even step inside its doors, because it happens to be housed in the OLDEST building in the entire state of Alaska (a national historic landmark building!
Now THAT is impressive.
The Kodiak History Museum Museum is a local history museum that explores the rich and fascinating history of Kodiak, Alaska. The exhibits focus on specific eras, so you can explore the Russian era from 1741 to 1867, as well as the early American era from 1867 to 1912.
Then of course, there is the modern era from 1912 to present day! It's a fascinating way for kids to see how life and culture changes across the decades.
Kids can learn all about the first people who lived in the region, as well as gain an insight into the Alutiiq heritage and culture. Did you know at Alaska was once colonized by Russia? Well, you can read all about it at the Baranov Museum! There is also a chance to learn about the US purchase of the state, as well as events and people who shaped Kodiak, and Alaska, to who they are today.
Learn about the Sami Reindeer people, and discover some of Kodiak's eccentric characters through first-hand accounts, interviews with scholars and elders, and highlights of unexplored aspects of Kodiak's history.
