What do you think of when you hear the name George Washington? We're sure many words come to mind! George Washington represents the birth of modern America, and the Karl C Harrington Museum of George Washington is a great way for kids to learn all about the amazing history of this amazing country!
The museum itself has a focus on artifacts and art that has been collected from the colonial period, right through to 1865. With letters, glassware, silver, furniture, and paintings just to name a few, there are plenty of fascinating things to see and learn from.
Of course, some of the artifacts have connections with George Washington himself. Kids can come face to face with the 1783 prayer book of Martha Washington, and the original sketch from 1787 of the Mt. Vernon grounds. There are writing instruments and tools from Washington's own survey case, and and original tintype which depicts Robert E. Lee in his own uniform for the very last time.
Take a close look - can you see the craftsmanship in the 18th and 19th century furniture? You can see these in the preserved pieces from the estates of the Washington family themselves. Truly amazing items!
Want to know what the oldest item is? Can you guess? It's actually the hand-written will of Colonel Daniel Parke which is dated 1710. Incredible!
