We know history is fascinating, and we see pictures in books of ancient carvings and wonder who was behind them. Well, at Jeffers Petroglyphs you can see them in person!
Hidden among the prairie grasses are patches of fascinating uncovered rock, covered with around 5,000 amazing carvings left by the American Indians. These are known as petroglyphs!
Each drawing and carving has a meaning, with symbols depicting animals and people these American Indians encountered in their lives. There are carvings which depict buffalo, thunderbirds, elk, deer, arrows, and even humans. Their story spans over an incredible 7,000 years!
But why did they do it? Just like us writing a book isn't it? Exactly! These drawings tell a story, from the importance of animals and hunting in their lives, to special events and sacred ceremonies.
The carvings were also used as a way to communicate with other. The site of Jeffers Petroglyphs is actually still considered a sacred site among American Indians today, and they use the site for their prayers. It's an amazing place, and an eye opening experience for kids!
Luckily for the family there are programs for ALL ages too! There are daily programs at 2pm which cover a range of topics, from Prairie Tours, American Indian Games, Winter Count and even Animal Tracks. They even have special events several times a month (usually on Saturdays) where you can experience Starry Night, astronomy, and learning all about Early Hunting Tools.
With 160 acres of prairie and a 1.2 mile prairie trail, you certainly have enough to fill your family day out!
