We all know about potatoes, and we know that Idaho is famous for them! But where do they come from? Lucky for you, the Idaho Potato Museum is there to help!
The Idaho Potato Museum is a very unique experience which showcases those famous potatoes, and the fascinating history of the journey from the first one planted, to being a staple as potato crisps!
The historic building was built in 1912, so straight away you are surrounded by history. It was once bustling with activity, with actual and surprising ties between the railroad and the potato industry. Kids can learn some fun facts about the history of the potato - from the growing and harvesting process (one they might now know, or even take for granted) - how does it end up on your plate?
They will also, importantly, learn about the nutrition of the potato, as well as fun trivia and educational facts. They can even indulge in the video presentation available for them to watch.
Did you know that the first potatoes that were grown in Idaho were planted by a man named Rev. Henry Spaulding? Pioneers came in 1847, and the first potato patch was ploughed and seeded - and so it began! By 1904 there were 17,000 acres harvested for potatoes....and the Idaho potato boom was born!
Did you know that potatoes are now grown in all 50 states? Did you know that the potato is 80% water? Did you know that it was Thomas Jefferson who gets the credit for introducing "french fries" to the USA? AND did you know that the largest potato grown was 7 pounds 1 ounce?
All amazing fun facts you can learn whilst at the Idaho Potato Museum!
It's a fun, unique and unusual day out for the family, with a surprisingly educational experience in there too. It's also a part of the Idaho identity.
