Founded in 1957 and operated by the Historical Society of Western Virginia, the History Museum of Western Virginia shares space with the O Winston Link Museum in the former passenger station of the N&W Railway, so already your day is surrounded by history when you first arrive.
This historic museum holds a collection featuring the largest repository of materials devoted to the human history of Western Virginia - that is pretty impressive! There are nearly 6,000 3D objects, 1,000 textiles, 8,000 photographs and SO much more, ready for you to discover it all!
Topics include Native American artifacts, photographs, maps, militaria, and folk-life artifacts. Did you know that you can see Thomas Jefferson's letter describing his scientific observations when he visited Peaks of Otter? There is also a land grant deed signed by Jefferson himself, and medical implements used by Colonel William Fleming during the Revolution!
