Did you know that even just a visit to The History Museum of Mobile is a destination in itself? Yes, the building is a national historic landmark (it's housed in the Southern Market/Old City Hall) and a wonderful way to spend the day in this exciting city.
The History Museum of Mobile is dedicated to preserving and telling the story of the city's rich history, with exhibits filled with artifacts, text, audio, video, and hands on interactives that bring the history to life.
The museum features both permanent exhibits, as well as changing exhibits, so there will always be something to go back to!
Strolling around the permenant exhibits, you can learn about all the Faces of Mobile across three centuries. Who shaped the city? Who influenced the city? Many of these people arrived seeking new opportunities - that better life. Others came because they were forced. The people that shaped the city were immigrants, and they were political refugees, some were artists, merchants, builders, teachers, and slaves. These men and women made Mobile the city that it is today. They were pioneers, and you can learn all about their stories at the History Museum of Mobile.
Also in the permenant collection kids can enjoy an upclose glimpse of Confederate Naval history first hand in a 700 square foot gallery with a particularly heavy and very impressive centerpiece: one of the original eight cannons from Civil War commerce raider ship CSS ALABAMA! How amazing is that?
Mobile also enjoyed some of the finer things in life, which can be seen in another permanent exhibit. Some of the pieces include Baccarat crystal, Boehm porcelain, souvenirs from several of Mobile's oldest mystic societies, sculptuure and even paintings.
There are of course exhibits that take you back in time to Mobile’s first inhabitants, the Native Americans, and their cultures, traditions and story.
Then, with the changing exhibits, you'll really dig deep into the fascinating history of Mobile!
So it makes sense in Mobile to immerse yourself in the history - it will make your time there so much richer and more fulfulling, and kids will love the city so much more!
