History comes to life at the iconic Historic Cody Mural and Museum, where you can learn all about the Mormon pioneers of the 1800s - who they were and how they lived!
The museum itself offers the opportunity to see up closer original works by local artists that depict the experience of Mormon pioneers as they survived (and eventually thrived!) in the wilds of the Cody region of Wyoming.
The museum exhibits host a number of historic artifacts, including photos of the original settlers of the area. Kids can learn all about the building of the Sidon Canal and even hear firsthand stories of pioneer sacrifice and faith.
Kids always love the touch-screen displays and you can also enjoy seeing a seven-minute video.
Want to learn more about your family? The Historic Cody Mural and Museum have four interactive kiosks where you can explore your family histories!
Some of the highlighs in the museum is the bronze bust of Abraham O Woodruff, who was the main motivating force in the settlement of the Big Horn Basin.
Another highlight of the Historic Cody Mural and Museum are the hand-forget iron horse hobbles.
Kids, did you know that hobbles are still used today to secure a horse when you don't have a post or a tree to tie it up to?
Today they are more then often made of leather or rope, but the iron hobbles you'll see in the museum were used over a century ago!
Another amazing item you'll see in the museum is a first edition Book of Mormon! Translated by Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon was first printed all the way back in March 1830, and just 5,000 copies were created in that first printing. The one you'll see here is one of the few on display in the USA.
Of course, you have to stop to look at the historic mural too. The mural was rreated to tell the story of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which includes the westward expansion of the Mormon pioneers. Kids always love seeing the mural up close as its so rich in color, content and history!
A wonderful free admission day out in Cody filled with history and art, and great for families too!
