There is SO much history to see and experience in South Carolina, and what better place to really get into the history than in Camden - the oldest existing inland town in the entire state!
The Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site lets you experience and learn all about the American Revolution battles that were fought in the area, all the way back in 1780 and 1781. There were actually two battles, and the Battle of Camden was actually the worst American defeat in the entire war.
And it happened only nine miles away from where the museum stands today! As you walk round the exhibits in the museum, think about all that you are reading actually happened nearly right under your feet. It's a pretty amazing concept!
The Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site is a great place to spend a few hours with a guided, or self-guided tour. Think of all the amazing facts you will learn!
There is also a huge 107 acre outdoor museum complex which has so much to explore, including the town site of 18th century Camden, as well as a furnished and restored 1785 John Craven House, two early 19th century log cabins and reconstructions of the military fortress!
The log cabins even have exhibits in them, so spend some time in there! We haven't finished yet though! There is a blacksmith exhibit, as well as a .6 mile nature trail great for those active little history buffs in the family!
With numerous landmarks of early Camden, and a 1785 Quaker Cemetery to see, your day will be filling up quickly!
History CAN be fun and interesting at the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site!
