History and nature meet at the beautiful Historic Blakeley State Park, that spans over 2,100 acres - and which also happens to be located on the largest National Register Historic Site in the eastern half of the USA!
Within the park itself, you'll find the site of the last major battle that was fought in the Civil War, and this includes several miles of unspoiled Union and Confederate fortifications, that were all associated with the Battle of Fort Blakeley of April 9, 1865.
See kids, you're learning already and you haven't even arrived at the Historic Blakeley State Park yet!
The site also features remnants of the important early Alabama town of Blakeley. This includes colonial-era homesteads, and even evidence of American Indian habitation from various periods - these would be the Archaic, Woodland, Mississippian and Historic periods.
Historic Blakeley State Park is located in one of the most ecologically diverse areas of the state of Alabama, and the park is also dedicated to preverving the natural setting as a unique wildlife preserve, which we love!
It was actually back in 1974 that the 3,800 acres of Blakeley Historic Site were placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and then in 1981 it became Historic Blakeley State Park.
Today, the park focuses much of its historical interpretation on the story of the town of Blakeley as well as the Battle of Fort Blakeley.
Don't forget about the host of outdoor activities you can enjoy too! From hiking, to horseback riding, fishing and camping, the history is the cake, and the nature is the icing and the cherry!
