With FREE admission, there is no excuse to not visit the Guntersville Museum in Alabama!
Set near the beautiful 69,000 acre Lake Guntersville, the Guntersville Musuem was built in 1936, prior to WWII, as a military armory for the 167th Infantry Division.
So already you're immersed in history, before you walk through the doors!
There area a number of collections within the museum, and it really is a great learning experience for the kids. They have exhibits that document the history of Guntersville itself. You can see "Mississippi Bill" Harris's 12ft long fishing board that conquered thousands of miles of river, to exhibits showcasing what life was like in the 1800s.
Kids can imagine the activities in the past through archival photos, and it really will take you back in time!
The museum is also home to a permanent collection of works by local artist Frank Nelson, as well as an impressive Native American exhibit. Here kids can see artifacts that date back to the Paleo-Indian era, and see relics of the first inhabitants.
The Guntersville Museum also has a natural history collection too, worth a look. The collection is mostly native birds that were collected and mounted in the 1920s, but a fascinating insight into the local inhabitants of the area!
Don't miss the traveling exhibits of the museum too. These are worth checking out because they won't be in the museum for long!
A great historic insight for kids, where they can see history right in front of their eyes. Plus it's in a beautiful part of Alabama, so that doesn't hurt either!
