History doesn't have to be boring! You can be a part of it at the George Rogers Clark Historical Park, the site where the British, American Indians and French militia all came together as part of the American Revolutionary War. It's certainly an important part of the USA's history!
As soon as you step foot into the memorial rotunda, you can feel the presence of George Rogers Clark. There is a bronze statue of Clark that you can see - did you know he was only 25 years old when he decided to lead the frontiersmen into Illinois County? That's pretty impressive! He had a vision, that would end the raids of Indian frontier settlements.
Have a look at the walls of the memorial rotunda - there are seven in total which all depict the Clark expedition story. They are a HUGE 28 feet tall and 16 feet long. It took a total of two years to complete - we don't know if we would have that kind of patience!
The stone memorial stands 85 feet tall, and you can get a sense of what it's all about with the 30 minute movie that you can watch when you arrive.
It's great for people who love history, and love learning. You will come away with some amazing facts! Did you know that the British soldiers wore wool uniforms all year round? (We couldn't!) Did you know that the Indians and the French-speaking people that lived in the northwest actually supported both sides of the conflict?
The George Rogers Clark Historical Park makes learning fun! The Visitor Center is a great place to start, because you can pick up some handouts, maps, and other information on the park. There are also exhibits within the building that cover the various cultures that were involved in the Clark story, and other facets of this conquest of the Northwest Territory.
Get right to the heart of history and immerse yourself in a fascinating part of the country’s development with the George Rogers Clark Historical Park!
