Occasionally you come across a state park that is really special, and General Coffee State Park might just be one of these!
At a huge 1511 acres, General Coffee State park is known as one of southern Georgia’s “best kept secrets". Here, you not only get the great outdoors, you get history, adventure, and even animals! We don't just mean the natural wildlife - but we'll get to that later!
The park was donated to the state by a group of Coffee County citizens back in 1970 and is named after General John Coffee, who was a planter, U.S. Congressman and military leader. Quite an impressive resume!
Today, the park is known for agricultural history that you can explore at Heritage Farm, with log cabins, a corn crib, tobacco barn, cane mill and other exhibits which are great for the kids so they can learn all about it. Of course, what would a farm be without animals, and here kids can enjoy feeding the park's farm inhabitants! These usually include goats, sheep, chickens, pigs and donkeys.
If you want to extend your stay at the park, you can take advantage of the camping, cottages and the Burnham House, which is an elegantly decorated 19th-century cabin.
Feeling adventurous? Check out the seventeen-mile river and a boardwalk that will take you through cypress swamp where rare and endangered plants grow. Those keen eyes in the family might just spot the shy indigo snakes and gopher tortoises that make their homes in this wiregrass community.
For horse lovers, the park offers 13.4 miles of equestrian trails. With archery, boating, geocaching and fishing to boot, it's no wonder this Georgia gem is one of the best kept secrets - are you ready to be "in" on it too?
