Are you excited to get out and enjoy a family day out filled with adventure, fun, activities and nature - all in the beautiful New England? Just head to Freetown Fall River State Forest, and that's exactly what you'll enjoy!
This beautiful forest is only 15 minutes from New Bedford, and is actually a park that slowly grew from the 1930s to the 1950s - and now it makes up an amazing place for families just like yours to go!
The day use area is right next to the main entrance. Here, you will find a host of fun activities including a picnic area, fields, and a wading pool. This is perfect if you have little ones in the family, or just want a simple park experience.
The remainder of Freetown Fall River State Forest is 50 miles of unpaved trails and roads. It's the perfect place for horseback riders, dog sledders, snowmobilers and mountain bikers to enjoy. If you are serious hikers, you will really enjoy getting out there.
If you love to spend time together just relaxing by the river waiting for that catch, then you are in luck because Rattlesnake Brook meanders through much of the park, and is stocked each spring with brook trout. Just sit there and take it all in - a beautiful spot!
There is also some history to explore at Profile Rock, which is a 50 ft outcropping. It shows a profile of what the Wampanoags believe to be Chief Massasoit. 227 acres of the forest is the Watuppa Reservation where the annual tribe meetings are still held. Amazing cultural learning for the kids.
Don't just wait for the sun when there is year round fun at this New England park!
