About this activity

Kids, let's take you back to the 19th century, where masonry fortifications were the USA's main defence against those trying to attack from overseas.  Then, the Civil War brought in new technology and history was starting to change course.

Fort Pulaski National Monument was part of that landmark turning point that changed the history of invention and military science for good. Sounds pretty impressive, doesn't it? Well, that's because it is!

You see, during the Civil War, it was at Fort Pulaski that the Union army used rifled cannon, causing the Confederate garrison inside the fort to surrender. If they hadn't, imagine how different the USA could have been today!

Now, you can visit the fort and learn all about it's amazing history for yourselves - right on the spot where it happened!

At Fort Pulaski National Monument, families can experience exciting and interesting activities all year round. The Fort itself is a huge large-scale outdoor exhibit, showcasing fine examples of historic military architecture with it's drawbridges and ditches. Don't forget your camera!

Inside the fort, kids can see exhibits that highlight the history of the construction, as well as it's eventual fall as even more advanced military technology came about.

They also offer guided tours throughout the week, where you can learn even more about the fort and ask as many questions as you like! Kids - we thought you might like that one!

If you are feeling adventurous, don't forget that around the fort itself you can enjoy the amazing nature, whether you want to hike, bike, and even kayak! If you love photography and studying nature, it's a pretty special spot for you too!

You can even fish on the banks of the Savannah River,

So why not spend your next family day out re-living history where it actually happened. As much as history books are amazing, you can't beat being there to learn.
