Did you know that Fort Delaware State Park is one of Delaware's FIRST state parks? That makes it pretty special! It also happens to feature some pretty amazing historic sites that are on the National Register of Historic Places!
Want to hear some of the amazing history? Let's go! The Union fortress dates back to 1859, and actually once served as a prison for the Confederate prisoners of war. It was actually originally build to protect Philadelphia and Wilmington, and in particular the Ports there.
You journey into Fort Delaware State Park will take you on a 1/2 mile gerry ride from Delaware City to Pea Patch Island. Once you arrive, fun and informative costumed interpreters will take you right back to the summer of 1864...you will remember it like it was only yesterday! (Kidding - we know you're not that old!)
The kids day will be filled with hands-on history They can be on hand when that very impressive 8-inch Columbiad gun will actually fire a live gunpowder charge! There is also a replica of Pea Patch Island how it would have been back in 1864, and kids can also check out some artifacts from the island's past.
Fort Delaware State Park isn't all about history though. It's a beautiful part of nature, and teeming with wildlife! Over summer the park is home to 9 different species of herons, ibis and egrets - so keep an eye out! There are also remote marshes which offer a lovely habitat for one of the largest wading bird nesting areas on the entire East Coast.
Bring those hiking shoes too, because there is a hiking trail and an observation platform great for taking pictures.
So much historical fun for the whole family!
