We all know about that infamous landing of the English colonists in 1607 - but have you ever thought about visiting that exact spot that it happened?
Now you can! First Landing State Park is called that because well...it's the first landing spot! Way back when on that very important day, you would have seen those Colonial settlers navigate their way onto the shore.
But as you stand there - think about everyone else that would have experienced this iconic piece of cove. Native American canoes would have made their way through the waters long before the colonists. 20th century schooners would have followed a couple of centuries afterwards, and now modern day cargo ships are sailing their way into the history books of the area.
First Landing State Park is a great way for kids to not only have fun on the beach and in the water, but also a great way for them to learn all about the history and geography of the area too.
Did you know that the cypress swamps were a fresh source of water for those pirates and military ships back in the War of 1812? Apparently Blackbeard actually hid in the Narrows area of the park too!
The interior waterways were actually used by the Confederate and Union patrols during the Civil War, and now the area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It's also the state's most visited state park! There are20 miles of trails as well as 1.5 miles of beautiful sandy beaches that you can enjoy (after all that learning of course!), and there are also a range of habitats that you can explore - from the lagoons to the bald cypress swamps.
History....beach....and family fun. Welcome to First Landing State Park!
