Heres a fun fact for you. Did you know that Evergreen Plantation in Louisiana is THE most intact plantation complex in the South?
How amazing is that! You are literally walking through the pages of history. It's an educational kids won't be able to gain from books, as they learn all about the history of the people who lived and worked on the land.
The complex itself features 37 buildings which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include 22 actual slave cabins too.
This is the highest historic designation you can get in the USA, with Mount Vernon and Gettysburg on the same register.
Today, the Evergreen Plantation is still a place where people live and work, as it's a privately owned sugar cane plantation. Located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, it's also an incredibly stunning part of the country to visit!
Evergreen Plantation operates two tours a day which will take you deep into the plantation culture in Louisiana. You'll learn all about the 250 years of family ownership, as well as the architectural significance of the buildings.
Children will also learn about the dependence on slave labor, and why the later freeing of the African-Americans was so important to not only the operation, but to the people.
A fascinating insight into the history of the South, and a history that children should understand so they can see how far we have come.
