The Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center is only 16 miles southwest of downtown Dallas and is THE place to see a variety of unusual species and topography.
The canyon forms a convergence of two ecosystems, Juniper forest and Blackland prairie, where you can see a Black-chinned hummingbird of the west and a Flowering dogwood tree of the east.
The Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center features over 200 acres of pristine habitat to provide homes for these special plants and wildlife. Best of all, it's FREE to the public! So why wouldn't you want to get out there and explore!
Make sure you take your hiking shoes, because there are TWO miles of trails that will take you into the forested canyon. There is the easy Canyon Floor Trail, where younger kids can really get immersed in nature and is stroller-friendly. For the more serious adventurous family, the West Loop Trail will take you to the top of the White Rock escarpment and give you beautiful views on both sides of the canyon.
Along the way, you can keep your eye out for wildlife, including birds, lizards, rabbits and toads and learn all about the wilderness that you are exploring. For those kids who want to just enjoy some play time, there is a fun, unstructured Nature Play Area where kids can free play and use their imagination.
With picnic tables, water fountains, restrooms, Nature Store, trails and bird viewing areas, it's the perfect stop for the family!
To learn even more about the canyon, you can book a Guided Hike or participate in family event.
So what are you waiting for...nature is calling!
