Diamonds are a family's best friend at the Crater of Diamonds State Park! This amazing geological wonder in Arkansas is the ONLY diamond-producing mine that is open to the public - in the entire world! So it really is a one-of-a-kind experience for the whole family! You could say it's a ..."gem" Ha!
At Crater of Diamonds State Park you can experience a real adventure actually hunting for real diamonds! There is a ploughed field over 37 acres which is actually the eroded surface of an ancient volcanic crater. 100 million years ago this actually brought diamonds to the surface, as well as the semi-precious stones that those lucky visitors still find today!
Did you know that diamonds aren't always white? Nope! They come in all the colors of the rainbow, but the ones that you can find at this beautiful state park are brown, yellow and white.
Along with the diamonds, there are over 40 other types of rocks and minerals that can be found here. These include garnet, calcite, barite, amethyst and hematite. It's an incredible place, and it's been a state park entertaining families just like yours since 1972.
There are lots of historical remnants of the old mining ventures which can be seen within the park, including the Guard House and the Mine Shaft Building, as well as some smaller artifacts. It's the best preserved area in the country revolving around the history of diamond mines.
As well as the area to search for these diamonds, there are hundreds of acres of amazing forest to explore. And yes - it's finders keepers for those gems at the Crater of Diamonds State Park!
Good luck!
