The history of the USA is fascinating, and Coronado National Memorial commemorates on expedition which influenced the Spanish colonial exploration in the USA. And what better place to learn all about it than in the exact location that it happened!
Vasquez de Coronado was a name in history that resulted in the 16th century Spanish exploration. Now, with Coronado National Memorial, the whole family can learn about this rich history. Not only that, there is the impressive Coronado Cave to explore too!
There are a host of things to do during your time at Coronado National Monument. In addition to the outdoor activities including hiking, picnicking, birding and wildlife spotting, there is the impressive 3 mile drive to the Montezuma Pass scenic outlook.
From there you can hike one mile to Coronado Peak, with other, more challenging trails off the back of that.
And then of course, there is the spectacular Coronado Cave. Make sure you allow at least two hours for this visit. Even the history of the cave is exciting in it's own right! It's thought that the cave was once used by humans as a shelter, and even a hideout by middle archaic people up to a HUGE 8,000 years ago.
Now, the cave is open to explore, and is a huge 600 feet long, and in a lot of places, 70 feet wide.
Make sure you go prepared though, because these are self-guided cave tours. Make sure you have sources of light, gloves, helmets and whistles. It never hurts to tell a ranger where you are going too!
A fascinating day out in Arizona, with some underground exploration too!
