Coopers Rock State Forest is named for Coopers Rock, which is a series of sandstone cliffs that site above the Cheat River Gorge. Kids - here's a bit of fun information! Legend has it that a fugitive hid near what is now the overlook. This fugitive was a cooper by trade, and he continued to make and sell barrels from his mountain hideout.
Then, during the 1800s the iron industry blossomed in the area that is now Coopers Rock. You can even see some of this history today, with the remains of the Henry Clay Furnace – the first steam-powered blast furnace in western Virginia. It's now a popular hiking and biking destination in the forest.
This West Virginia gem is just a few minutes off Interstate 68, and has a host of overlooks where you can stop and enjoy the amazing canyon views in any season.
Not only that, you can look towards your next adventure too! You see, Coopers Rock State Forest is an ideal getaway for families, as there are a host of treasures and activities within it's boundaries perfect for that family day out.
There are numerous historical sites within the forest, as well as miles of hiking trails for those more active kids. There are even lots of spots to explore around the enormous boulders and cliffs.
Coopers Rock State Forest is a huge 12,713 acres, and also offers camping too if you want to extend that stay! You might need extra time there to spot all of the local wildlife. The observant hiker can hear and sometimes see squirrels, chipmunks, hawks, owls, turkeys, turkey vulture, songbirds, fox and deer throughout the forest.
