If you just LOVE to learn, then why not head to a place that is ALL about educating visitors on some pretty fascinating topics!
The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum is a great place to go for those families who love history, and of course - boats!
The museum is dedicated to telling the story of the construction and repair of those amazing canal boats, as well as the social history of the Erie Canal era.
The Erie Canal has a fascinating history in itself! Did you know that it was only in 1985 that a small group of visionaries came across a rubbish-strewn area of land along the canal, and learned about the history from a map that dated back all the way to 1895! How amazing!
From this, the learned that canal boats were built on land there, and repaired within the docks! They can see the wood timbers being shaped, and hear the blacksmiths hammer striking the anvil. What an amazing image that must have been!
Through restoration and preservation, that once rubbish-strewn dock now once again bustles with activity - and YOU can be a part of it!
The Chittenango Landing Canal and Museum won the 2010 Erie Canalway Heritage Award of Excellence, so it must be doing something right!. This award honors and celebrates significant places of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and recognizes excellence.
They also have a fun range of seasonal events spread through out the year covering such diverse sources as Checkers Tournaments and Blacksmith's Workshop!
Learning, history, and great family fun in New York!
