Did you know that Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park was once the site of one of the bloodiest battles that occured during the Civil War?
Well it was and today it makes for an invaluable learning experience as you step back and delve into the city's history and visit the actual site of the battle itself.
During your time at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the knowledgable park rangers will share with you the rich history and events that occurred right on the very land you'll be standing.
During the fall and winter months from Labor Day to Memorial Day, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park offers a number of regularly scheduled ranger-guided tours which are great for families.
When you arrive, your first port of call should be the Visitor Center, where your adventure can start. The visitor center is home to exhibits covering the Civil War era, plus exhibits specifically on the 1863 Campaign for Chattanooga.
Many families actually travel to the park JUST to see the Fuller Gun Collection too, which is one of the best displays of military small arms in the United States! Pretty impressive!
Also at the visitor center you can enjoy a 26 minute orientation film, The Campaign for Chattanooga: Death Knell of the Confederacy
Beyond the battlefield, did you know that over twenty families lived inside what is now Chickamauga Battlefield? Today, you can see three historic cabins each dating to the late 1800s-early 1900s, standing on the field today.
Did you also know that there are plenty of outdoor activities you can enjoy too? Today nearly 10,000 acres of preserved and uninhabited landscape encompass Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, making it one of the largest outdoor green spaces in the entire Chattanooga area!
You can enjoy hiking or running on the 50 miles of trails, cycle or even horseback ride! With rock climbing, paddleboarding and kayaking to top off the nature-filled experience, there are so many reasons to visit this historic site.
