Did you know that you could have parks listed on the National Register of Historic Places? Well, you can when they are the state's earliest documented designed landscapes!
Maine's Capitol Park is 34 acres which overlook the Kennebec River - which will make for some amazing views too whilst you play in nature!
What's even more amazing, is that these 34 acres were actually donated by the residents living in the area so that the State House could be built. Isn't that amazing!?
Now, you can have a family day out in nature and history! There are amazing elms that were planted as part of the landscaped design, and gravel paths to explore. There is a huge amount of lawn where kids can run, play, hide and enjoy the sunshine.
The original plans for the park intended for there to be a zoo and gazebo, but only the tennis courts, and gardens with the native trees and shrubs, as well as the paths which can lead you down for the amazing river views were built.
Why not take a picnic and just enjoy a day out relaxing? Perhaps bring those walking or jogging shows and get those kids using up all of that energy!
It's a great place to relax in between visiting other attractions in the area too, including the Kennebec River Rail Trail.
Capitol Park is a great place for kids to learn some of our country's history, with a Vietnam Veterans Memorial, as well as a memorial for those 9/11 victims.
A nature filled day out in Augusta, Maine for the whole family!
