It's time to take a tour through history at the Bragg Mitchell Mansion, a historic staple of Mobile!
Bragg Mitchell Mansion was built all the way back in 1855, by Judge John Bragg. The impressive 13,000 sq ft Greek Revival was built by Bragg for his wife and family to enjoy during the vibrant social season in Mobile, Alabama. (The social season began at Thanksgiving, and went through until Mardi Gras)
After Judge Bragg died in 1878, four different families owned the mansion at one time or another, up until the late 1970s when the home was donated with a view to it becoming a museum - after all, it had become an icon of Mobile over the years (and when you visit, you'll see why!)
In 1972, Bragg Mitchell Mansion was placed on the National Register of Historic Place, and underwent extensive preservations and renovations before opening to the public in 1987. Today, not only is it a wonderful location for private events, but it's a fascinating day out for the family as you can enjoy a tour around this incredible property!
The long-term goal of the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion is to restore the building, grounds, and furnishings to reflect lifestyles of previous owners, so keep an eye on the mansion in the future!
Guided tours operate on the hour, and really give you a sense of life over 150 years ago! Kids, can you imagine living in the 1850s? Not quite like life today with iPhones and computers!
A great day out for the family, as Bragg Mitchell Museum really does let you in on the rich history of Mobile.
