The idea of spending a day in a park in summer is lovely - wandering through the big leafy trees, fishing on the banks of the pond, or getting out on to the water in your own canoe. Kids can run and play with the leaves in Fall, or smell the flowers in spring, and enjoy their lunch on the grass in summer. But what about winter? Time to stay indoors?
We don't think so!
Borderland State Park is a great all year round park, so no need to avoid it in the winter months. Spend the day ice-skating or sledding on the frozen waters, all rugged up in your big fluffy jackets and gloves!
The park is one of the most historically significant pieces of land owned publicly in the Commonwealth, so there is a great history there to explore, which might fascinate the kids.
The estate on the grounds is a stunning ivy-covered three-storey mansion built in 1910, and all twenty rooms look quite the same as they did when they were lived in! Can you imagine the kind of people that would have lived there, as you walk around looking at their house? Can you imagine living like they did?
They hold scheduled tours so you can really learn about the history and imagine the past.
In the summer, there are beautiful dragonflies and damselflies to enjoy, even live turtles in the six (yes six!) ponds they have on the grounds, so it's a great place for kids to try and find these little creatures hiding in the woodland!
There are over 20 miles of hiking trails, which range in difficulty, and a lovely 3 mile biking loop for families.
Nature's calling!
