Some of the USA's state parks have great outdoor adventure, and some have a fascinating history. Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park is one that has both!
This incredible state park is rich with history, both from the 19th century and from millions of years ago!
The park contains a town that was actually built in the 1890s, and is preserved in a state of arrested decay, but still incredible to see.
It is a true Nevada ghost town! Kids, don't worry, we don't mean it's haunted. A ghost town is a name for a place that was once thriving, but no-one lives there anymore.
Within Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park you can really step back in time and see the original buildings that remain from all those years ago, and even visit some of the towns former residents in the cemetery.
And for that history from millions of years ago? Well, Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park is also home to the most abundant concentration, and the largest known remains, of the incredible Ichthyosaurs! This ancient creature was actually a marine reptile that swam in the warm ocean that covered Nevada 225 millions years ago.
Yes, Nevada used to be under the ocean! How is THAT for an incredible history?
The fossils can be found in the park's Fossil House, which is also a great place to start your adventure within the state park.
Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park also offers camping from mid-April to October, and plenty of trail markers so you can enjoy your own self-guided tour of the area.
A jurassic family day out in Nevada!
