Did you know that the Bass River State Forest was the first forest that was acquired by the beautiful state of New Jersey? Yep! In fact, it was all the way back in 1905. so imagine all the families that have enjoyed it over the past century! Quite a few we imagine!
Bass State Forest still makes a fun and adventurous family outing for all ages. The highlight is Lake Absegami, which is 67 acres of man-made lake created back in the 1930s. It was made as a place where visitors could swim, and enjoy those water activities they loved.
From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the lake still is the best place to enjoy some swimming, as a lifeguard is on duty to keep everyone safe! There is also an area with showers, restrooms and a changing area so very family friendly indeed!
If you pick up a fishing license, you can try and catch those freshwater species including sunfish, catfish and pickerel.
During the summer months, there is a canoe, rowboat and kayak concession so you can actually get right out onto the water, and enjoy a view of Bass River State Forest from a whole new angle!
For those families who prefer to stick to land, there are eight easy walking trails that range from as easy as 1 mile. There are some pretty incredible sights to see along the trains, including forested areas, streams, and once bustling towns!
Camping is a popular pastime within the forest too, so why not make a weekend of it and enjoy those tent and trailer sites. They have group camping too!
Nature really is calling at this beautiful New Jersey forest, so get those walking shoes on, and let's get exploring!
