Baltimore has an incredible industrial past, so it makes sense that there would be a museum dedicated to just that!
The Baltimore Museum of Industry [BMI] is all about preserving and interpreting the region’s industrial legacy, and shows how innovation is fuels ongoing progress too!
All of the exhibitions, programs and collections tell the stories of the people who build the great city of Baltimore, and those who are shaping the future.
The history is all around you from the moment you walk in as the museum is located in an 1860s oyster cannery across five waterfront acres.
Throughout your visit, you can visit galleries such as the belt-driven machine shop, blacksmith’s shop, oyster cannery, print shop, garment loft, or pharmacy and learn about historic Baltimore’s working life.
There are a number of ways that you can enjoy this popular Baltimore museum! First, you can grab that map and make your way through the galleries at your own pace on a self-guided tour. Kids will enjoy the host of hands-on touchboxes in certain galleries, and you can take your time taking everything in!
For those kids in the family who LOVE to ask questions, the guided tour might be for you! Led by a museum educator, you can enjoy an in-depth look at the galleries, including demonstrations of some of the machines! These are offered on weekends, and weekdays during the summer. Just ask at the front desk!
The third way is to enjoy audio guides on the iPod tour, as part of the self-guided tour! Pretty cool!
Keep an eye out for family-friendly activities such as the BMI Farmers’ Market or annual Bull and Oyster Roast. The museum offers something for everyone!
