Did you know kids, that the Augusta Museum of History if actually the oldest historical agency in the city, devoted to the preservation and presentation of local AND region history? That is pretty impressive!
Founded all the way back in 1937, the Augusta Museum of History collects, preserves and interprets history in relation to both the city and Central Savannah River region, so families just like yours can visit, and learn all about what made Augusta the wonderful city it is today!
You might want to allow a bit of time for your visit, as there are 12,000 years to catch you up on!
The story of Augusta starts with the award-winning (and aptly named) "Augusta's Story" exhibition, giving you a chronological look at how the region got started, and how it's evolved over the years. Kids can see prehistoric and Native American artifacts, slave-made pottery, and even a 12lb Napoleonic Cannon manufactured at the Augusta foundry highlight Civil War history.
Kids always love the Transportation Corridor too, where they can see actual vintage models of transportation from a 1920s Trolley Car, as well as a reconstructed 1930s gas station, and a 1914 steam locomotive!
There are exhibits highlighting local legends and their achievements (did you know Hulk Hogan from was Augusta?), the story of the state's second hospital, and even an exhibit on the Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown.
From the history of the railroad, to banking, and even an incredible collection of bottled (see it to believe it!), the Augusta Museum of History really brings to life the past, and is a great educational experience for kids!
