The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum is a sweet dedicated to the waterfowl, in the historic de Witt Cottage on the Virignia Beach waterfront.
Spend some relaxing time looking around all the art and artifacts that can teach kids about the migratory wildfowl that pass through Virginia.
It's fascinating to see how the story of the wildfowl have been depicted from the ancient American art form with carvings and simple drawings, right through to carvings from the present day.
The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum is definitely a niche museum for those who love wildlife, nature, and the local Virginia history, but it's a sweet place to bring the kids for a couple of hours.
There are a number of exhibits that feature in the museum. Fascinating decoys from the 1950s, various artworks, and contemporary decoys are all on display in the main gallery.
Wonder how those intricate and lifelike carvings were made? Just keep going to the Carving Room and you'll see! One of the carvers will be there and you'll be able to watch him demonstrate how he uses his skills and techiniques as he actually begins to carve his own wildfowl.
If there isn't a caver on hand when you visit, you can still look through the phases of carving, from beginning right through to finished product.
If he IS there, then kids - ask all the questions you want! He is there to teach you about his craft and answer any queries you might have about what he's doing. (Maybe it will inspire you to get creative once you get home!)
There are beautiful art works to check out, and even a boathouse and library seperate from the main cottage, which is actually Virginia Beach's FIRST library! History right at your feet!
The Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum is definitely something unique against all the other attractions in Virginia Beach (and possibly the country!) that will make for a relaxing family day out for any kids that love art, history, and birds.
