It's not usual to mention a cemetery on a list of things to do with the family, but when it's a place that holds such as strong connection with American history, it's one that is worth taking the family to.
A visit to the Arlington National Cemetery will give kids an experience that allows them to learn all about American history, as they walk around the graves of 400,000 service members, veterans and their families.
The cemetery itself is beautiful, with rolling green hills dotted with trees that are hundreds of years old. Among the many people who lie here today, there is one that is the draw card to visitors from all around the world - the final resting place of John F Kennedy. He is only one of two presidents that remain in the Arlington National Cemetery.
The first stop on your visit to the cemetery is the Welcome Center. Here, you can pick up all of the information you need during your visit, as well as books and maps to guide you. Then, you can wander around at your pleasure. The Memorial Amphitheater is where the memorials take place, and is an impressive structure.
One event not to miss is the changing of the guard ritual, which occurs each hour, on the hour, all year round. There is also the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and the Memorial Arboretum.
A fascinating day out for the family where kids can really learn about key events within American history, and one that is worth a visit when in Arlington.
