History really does come to life at the Arabia Steamboat Museum in Kansas City, because this fascinating museum tells the story of a remarkable historic event, through actual artifacts and stories from those who experienced it first hand.
In September 1856, the might steamboat sank carrying 200 tons of mystery cargo - it was lost for 132 years, and upon its recovery in 1988, it was like a treasure trove had been found - a modern day treasure-hunting story at its best!
The Arabia Steamboat Museum is home to a true time capsule of frontier life in the 1800s. Here, you can discovery the history behind the Steamboat Arabia, and actually see what remains of this infamous ship and yes, you can see some of that treasure recovered!
On display is clothing, and fine china, guns and carpentry tools - even dishes and children's toys (and the world's oldest pickles!) - it really is a collection to captivate all who visit, and a great way for kids to connect with history.
Not only can you learn about the sinking at the Arabia Steamboat Museum, but also the recovery over 30 years ago.
Kids can learn exactly how it sank, where it sank, and how all the artifacts (and some of the boat itself!) were preserved for all those years at the bottom of the Missouri River.
It really is quite spectacular to think about!
Reading history books is one thing, but SEEING it in person is another, so why not see history come to life right in front of your eyes, and explore the story of an event that is so important to Missouri history.
