The Amish is a fascinating culture, and at Amish Acres, you can introduce the kids (and even parents) to a new culture right on their doorstep.
Amish Acres is set on a beautiful 80 acres with a historic farm, as well as a heritage resort. It really lets people in to the traditions of this lesser known culture - and celebrates it! You can come for the day, or if you want to experience a bit more you can even spend the night.
The farmstead itself is actually listed in the National Register of Historic Places - so it's a pretty important part of the country's history! It was settled by the very FIRST Amish to Indiana, way back in 1839. (Quick math quiz - how many years ago was that?)
As you take your tour around the Amish homestead, you can feel the stories of the three generations who walked there before you over the last 125 years - what kind of people do you think they were like?
Kids will be taught the whys and ways of the Amish, as they explore the 12 room house, and they can even experience the sounds and sights of a real working farm, which is alive with livestock, hens, and the lovely apple orchard and gardens!
On the farm itself, they can see chores and crafts being created over the seasons. Did you know that products like apple butter, maple syrup, and molasses are produced here exactly how they would have been over a century ago? An amazing insight into history!
Ever wondered how quilts were hand stitched, or lye soap was made? Maybe even how those candles were dipped and created?
At the end of your tour, your guide will call you with the dinner bell and you'll discover outbuildings that dry and food and bake the bread. Yum yum!
Horse and buggy rides, culture, art, fun, food....what else could they fill your family day out with!?
Amish Acres is a fascinating family day out experience.
