If your kids love music, especially country music, chances are they have heard the banjo in action. It's an incredible instrument, and has played a huge part in American music, so it makes sense that Oklahoma City would create a museum dedicated to it's history, it's spirit, and it's future!
The American Banjo Museum in Oklahoma is 21,000sq ft of exhibits that tell the story of this small but amazing instrument. The museum's various collections hold over 400 instruments, as well as video, film, recordings, print music, and memorabilia, all related to the banjo. In fact, the museum has the largest collection on banjo's in the entire WORLD on display. Pretty amazing!
Did you know that the banjo was developed by African slaves? You can read all about the history as you walk through the halls. You might even spot actual Minstrel Age instruments dating back to the mid-19th century.
The American Banjo Museum holds Classic Era banjos from the late 1800s, and even post WWII instruments that were used in bluegrass and folk music.
The majority of the collection features ornately decorated banjos that were made in the US during that famous Jazz Age of the 1920's and 1930s.
Make sure you spend some time in the Banjo Hall of Fame too! Here the four-string banjo players are honored, and you might even spot some familiar faces such as actor Steve Martin and The Walt Disney Company!
So why not get those dancing shoes on, and spend a day learning all about this incredible instrument. You never know, you might get inspired to pick one up yourself!
