We all know that imagine of that mysterious lighthouse, casting it's light out over the ocean so the boats can see their way. But have you ever imagined you would be able to climb UP one of them?
Abescon Lighthouse is an amazing historic city in New Jersey, which is open all year round and lets families and kids climb all the way to the top to experience some pretty amazing views!
The lighthouse was built in 1857, and is actually the state's tallest lighthouse! Your journey to the top will be pretty adventurous (did we mention there were 228 steps?). It's also one of the oldest lighthouses in the entire USA, so it's even more special!
Once up the top, the sites will be amazing! You can look out over the skyline of Atlantic City, and even check out the original first-order Fresnel Lens which was actually first lit back in 1857 too.
You're surrounded by history!
The complex has had a huge restoration, with some extra bits added so kids can learn all about the history. There is an amazing replica of the Lightkeeper's dwelling, as well as an educational museum which is great to read all about the story of the lighthouse and the area. With a lovely gift shop and the Fresnel Lens exhibit, there is plenty to see!
Did we mention there is even an original Oil House and grounds which you can wander around and spend some time in?
They offer guided tours for families too, if you wanted to have that little bit more education as you go. It's also a great way to ask questions!
Check out the programs at Abescon Lighthouse too, because there are some pretty fun ones! There are fun Wacky Wednesdays where kids can come dressed up and create lots of fun arts and craft, and even night time climbs where you can check out the moon!
Heaps of lighthouse fun at Abescon!
