George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary is where nature can fill your family day out with wildlife, landscapes, and the GREAT outdoors! It's a super fun day out for the family, where kids can see amazing birds up close, and really get to learn about nature.
The bird sanctuary is nearly 300 hectares of wetlands, low dykes, and natural marshes, right in the heart of the Fraser River Estuary!
It's here that millions of birds feed and rest during their annual migration, right along the Pacific Coast. Here, they are protected from harm, and kids can learn all about how birds migrate, the wonders of nature, and even history!
Did you know that in the early 1900s these dykes were built to protect fishing communities for tidal waters?
The bird sanctuary is also the winter home of the Lesser Snow Goose and one of Canada's top bird-watching sites. The birds are easily viewed by the kids, so it really is a great way for them to learn!
It's now ranked as one of the top 10 bird watching sites in the entire country, and there is something to see all year round!
From flocks of ducks and geese migrating in winter, to nests in April, and arctic-nesting birds in fall, it's a family day out with nature joining you!
The trails are perfect for those families who want a quiet time in nature, as the trails are for birdwatching and walking only, no dogs or bikes allowed. Perfect!
