This is the only funicular of its kind in America! The Funicular takes you from the Upper City where the Chateau Frontenac, Basilica, Anglican Cathedral and Seminary are down to the historic Petit Champlain Quarter, which is near the ocean with the Place Royale and Notre-Dame-des-Victories church.
It was first built in 1879 and were once powered by a steam systems and water and in 1907 Alexander Cummings allowed it to be run on electricity. In 1946, following a fire, it was rebuit and has since undergone regular restorations. In 2004 the funicular celebrated its 125th anniversary and the event was commemorated by enveiling a work of art on the adjacent land.
The funicular is open all year round, even in winter! Wheelchair users will have access to the Funicular free of charge and pets are allowed too! In Winter when there is now it may be closed. The furnicular is accessed by two stations. The top station is located directly on the Dufferin Terrace with the kiosk adjacent to it and behind the famous Chateau Frontenac. The lower station is located in the heart of Petit-Champlain district.
