The past lives and breathes at Fort Steele Heritage Town. Perched on the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains since it's gold rush beginnings in 1864, the village has gone from boomtown to regional centre to ghost town to one of the most important heritage attractions of its kind in British Columbia. Enjoy old-time farming demonstrations, ice-cream making, train rides and horse-drawn wagon tours. Try gold panning, watch live theatre performances and observe the museum displays. Or simply enjoy the view in a Kootenay Rockies setting.
There's so much to see and explore, with something new to learn at every turn! You can explore on your own, or take a few days to explore it all. There 98 structures that have been preserved and maintained to their original design. There's also lots of education programs too for students and groups.
There are 15 Clydesdales, two friendly donkeys and a variety of chickens, ducks and pigs, but please don't feed them as they get fed enough and are very well looked after. You'll also find wagon rides, live street theatre, demonstrations and blacksmitthing that can be found in the Summer season which makes it a fantastic day out for the whole family.
