The Dawson City Museum was established all the way back in the 1950s, which means that it has been educating families for quite a while! The museum is THE place to visit if you want to learn all about the history of the Yukon - and there is a lot of history to explore! It also happens to be the largest and most important collection in the entire Yukon, so it's worth spending a decent amount of time there!
Kids can learn all about the geology of the area, as well as even the pre-history! Then, you can explore the First Nations who first lived in the area, then into the early exploration.
What happened next kids!? Well, one of the major events was of course the Gold Rush! You can hear all about the plight of those who traveled from afar to try and build their fortune.
Then of course - Dawson City had to be created somehow! At the Dawson City Museum you can actually find out how and why Dawson City itself was settled! It was an important part of the Klondike Region.
Also at the museum, are four restored narrow-gauge locomotives actually used by the Klondike Mines Railway between 1905 and 1913. How amazing is that!
There are even gold pouring demos that can show the whole family the realities of gold mining. It wasn't easy but most people found that if they literally struck gold - it would be worth it! What do you think!?
History is best learnt when you can actually use your imagine it, so the costumed interpreters make the experience extra special for the kids and let them ask questions, and really feel like they are part of history.
History IS fun, and you will find that out for yourselves at the Dawson City Museum!
