Art Gallery of Northumberland presents intellectually stimulating exhibitions and programming, as well as maintain a permanent collection of visual arts. Along with exhibitions they fulfill their mandate through educational activities which encourage active dialogue between the Gallery audience and the visual arts; including lectures, films, workshops, artist talks and tours.
Student educational programmes are provided both in the Gallery and in the classroom. Special programmes for secondary school students have been developed in collaboration with community schools and teachers.
Founded in 1960 by the Cobourg Public Library and a group of residents who wished to encourage the appreciation of fine art in the region, the Gallery has become a vital part of Northumberland County with now over 600 members.
Since its modest beginnings, the permanent collection has grown to include more than 650 works and the Gallery itself has moved to its present premises in historic Victoria Hall Cobourg and the "Upstairs Gallery" at 38 Walton Street, Port Hope.
The Gallery offers a wide variety of activities designed to enrich the knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts for people of all ages. It presents an ongoing schedule of exhibitions developed from the permanent collection as well as from other galleries and individuals.
