Step back through the history books with a visit to the fascinating ruins of Weoley Castle!
These amazing ruins date back over 750 years old and what they reveal are the remains of a fortified manor house that was originally built as a hunting lodge by the Lords of Dudley. Pretty impressive, huh?
In fact, what archaeologists also discovered is that the lodge was actually located in the heart of what was once a 1000 acre deer park!
The ruins of Weoley Castle that can be seen today are believed to date back as far as 1270. This means that you will be able to visit one of the oldest buildings still visible in Birmingham!
The ruins are so special that they were classified an Ancient Monument of National Importance in 1934. Not only that, during the 1930s and 50s a series of archaeological digs uncovered a rich collection of historic treasures!
Why was a former hunting lodge referred to as a castle? Well good question! You see it had a moat, as well as a curtain wall, and even towers and battlements PLUS there are examples of arrow slits. All very castle like!
However, the "castle" never had a keep, nor did it have the defensive position needed as it was located in a valley. In fact, during the Middle Ages those who lived in the area would have paid the Lords of Dudley a tithe (which is also known as a percentage) of their crops as rent for their land.
Today, Weoley Castle hosts a full programme of family activities and events across the year on specific "event days". It's worth noting that whilst you can view the ruins year round, direct access to the ruins themselves and visitor centre are only possible on specific event days.
