Winchester is a beautifull historic UK destination, and you may have heard of Winchester Castle.
Well, did you know that one very special part of Winchester Castle still survives today? In fact, it's one of the finest surviving medieval aisled halls of the 13th century - we are talking about The Great Hall of Winchester Castle!
Winchester Castle was founded back in 1067 by William the Conqueror, after that famous victory at the Battle of Hastings.
Then, later in 1222 you have Henry III who had a strong love of architecture, and he began the construction of one of the earliest Gothic styled medieval halls - yes, The Great Hall!
As you walk around, make sure you stop to admire the soaring Purbeck marble columns and stunning Gothic pointed archways.
Another great piece to check out during your visit is the iconic Round Table (yes, the one famously linked to the ancient legends of King Arthur and his Knights)
Kids can learn all about its unique role during these times. and the influence it had on kings throughout the course of history.
A visit to the Long Gallery will see kids meet the heroes and villains of the hall's past, and yes these include Kings and Queens but it also includes judges and executioners! All people part of that time's daily life!
After you've explored the hall, take some time to relax in a recreated medieval garden which was named after the Queens Eleanor of Provence as well as Eleanor of Castile.
Kids can also see scented herbs and plants that were actually very abundant in the 13th century!
Another part of the Great Hall kids always love, is a glimpse of the secret passages that were created to surprise an enemy, or simply to return to the safety of the castle - both in times of battle and besiege.
The Great Hall offers daily guided tours which are free to join and run at 11am and 3pm (subject to staff availability).
