Royston Cave has been welcoming visitors since 1742! The 22 metre tunnel was dug by local builder Thomas Watson and the tour will give you the chance to get up close and personal with the carvings all around.
The cave is cut to around eight metres into the chalk that lies beneath Royston's ancient crossroads. The carvings on the walls are mostly Christian and medieval styles. There are four prominent carvings in total. St Christopher, a patron of travellers, St Katherine, St Laurence and St George holding an upturned sword. There is also a large panel which seems to relate to the death of Jesus Christ and many more! A recent study suggests that the carvings were likely made in the mid-1300s!
The visual story will help you find your way around the cave and in it, includes photos and information about the things you'll see on your visit. When you arrive, you'll be greeted by your tour guide and ask them any questions you have! There are 17 steps into a chalk tunnel, so mind your head and take care as you travel down.
The carvings all have different meanings so it's important to listen to the guide as they explain what each one means, you may even hear an echo too!
The tour lasts for around 30 minutes and there's time after to ask qustions too! The Cave is a mystery and a visit to see for yourself and make up your own mind is a must!
