Experience history first hand at The Palace of Holyroodhouse where you might just feel like royalty yourself!
Did you know that the Palace of Holyroodhouse is actually the King's official residence in Edinburgh AND it's also the home of Scottish royal history!
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is open throughout the year, and can be found proudly at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile.
There is so much history to be learned at the palace! Did you know that when James IV first built the royal palace in 1503, the gardens were actually the setting for tournaments, hawking, hunting, hawking and even archery?
Also, did you know that according to medieval legend, the Abbey that can be seen on the grounds was founded in 1128 by David I of Scotland after he had a vision of a stag? Pretty cool!
As you walk around this impressive palace, kids can learn all about the Palace's relationships with some of Scotland’s most well-known historic figures. In fact. In fact, one of the most famous monarchs to reside at the Palace of Holyroodhouse is none of than than Mary, Queen of Scots! Between 1561-1567 this iconic monarch lived in her chambers there and are not to be missed.
These chambers are actually the oldest section of the palace and can be reached by a narrow, steep and winding staircase. At nearly 500 years old, the battlements and fortified walls that can be seen are typical of a time when royals required incredible protection against their enemies! (They often had a lot!)
Prince Charles Edward Stuart, who is also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, brought the Palace of Holyroodhouse back to life in 1745 during his six week reign there.
A fascianting experience for all - especially if you love history!
