Fort Nelson is home to the Royal Armouries' national collection of artillery and historic cannon, and it's free admission! If you wanted to learn more about the history and the armouries, it's a great place to visit for all ages.
You'l be able to step back in time and discover a fully restored Victorian form with high ramparts, original fortifications and a massive parade ground and even underground tunnels! You'll have beautiful panoramic views and see the collection of huge guns.
The mused has over 700 pieces of artillery from across the world, spanning 600 years of history. The oldest is a 15th century Turkish bombard cannon, a gigantic 200-tonne railway howitzer and the infamous Iraqi supergun. Each item has it's own story to tell.
The fort was originally built to pretect against invasion by the French which never materialised. However, it played a huge role in both World Wars and was used as a barracks for troops waiting to be deployed to the front line and and as an ammunition supply depot.
They also have entertaining children's activities that will teach them all about the role the fort played and a gift shop that is packed with pocket money items to remember your visit by.
