About Dundonald Castle

Dundonald Castle is a hidden gem, tucked away in the rural landscape in South Ayrshire in Scotland. Explore the fortified ruins and outdoors attractions with spectacular coastal views for a family day out to remember. 

You'll start at the visitor centre where there are interesting exhibitions and models showing the sttlement's evolution from Iron Age hill form, to a castle fit for the King. There's lots of dress-up clothings too which the little ones will enjoy!

You'll see imaginative reconstructions of the hill formts that existing 1500 years ago, the motte and bailey, the late 13th century castle and the third castle, they're all pretty impressive for their scale! They're all designed based on what is currently known about the castle's history. 

You'll be taken on a tour of the castle by the enthusiastic tour guides and explore the steep slopes and commanding views. The castle was once home to Scots King Robert II and boasts historic links to the Wallace family. 

You can admir ethe barrel-vaulted ceilings and join the castle team for stories and rare finds from 3500 years ago! There's a cafe too and plenty of picnic areas to enjoy.

Is Dundonald Castle fully accessible?

Dundonald Castle Visitor Centre is fully accessible and the castle is partially accessible but is located at the top of a steep hill. The interior of the castle can be accessed with a wheelchair although there are stairs to access the upper levels.
