About this activity

There is SO much fascinating history within the USA, but each state has it's own stories, and own fascinating history itself - so let's start with Ohio!

The Wood County Historical Museum features hands-on exhibits that can teach you all about the history of the county, but the state itself!

Even the location is seeped in history! The museum is the former site of the Wood County Poor Farm, which used to be a therapeutic rehabilitation. Now, many of those original structures still stand today, including the ice house which was built from materials that were from the old county jail, the hog barn, and even the asylum!

Inside these walls, there are over 30 exhibits that cover a range of historic topics. These range from the local Native Indians, to the fascinating Great Black Swamp.

There are exhibits which are more suitable for the older kids, such as a historical look at the American Mental Illness, and diseases contracted within the asylum, but the history is fascinating for the older kids and parents.

If you want to enjoy the beautiful Ohio countryside, then check out the 50 acre grounds and herb garden that surround the Wood County Historical Museum. Great for walks and picnics!

A amazing history to be explored in an unusual setting for your Ohio family day out
