About this activity

Active families, you will just love the plethora of outdoor activities that you can enjoy at William B Umstead State Park! Visit William B Umstead State Park and enjoy this region of wilderness at the city's doorstep.

Love exploring nature on foot? Check out over twenty miles of hiking trails that give you access to most of the state park. You can choose between a relaxing, short stroll along a nature trail, or a more extensive hike right into the woods.

Either way, you will be rewarded with beauty and diversity all around you!

If you prefer horseback or cycling, William B Umstead State Park has around thirteen miles of multiuse trails just for that. In fact, these trails will take you to some of the most scenic and secluded parts of the entire park!

The trailsheads on both sides of the park surround three manmade lakes. The largest of these lakes is Big Lake (fitting name!), and it's here you can pick up canoes and kayaks from the rental, and head out onto the water!

If it's fishing you love, then you are welcome to try and catch your luck on all the lakes and connecting tributaries.

When you want to stop and take it all in, head to the picnic grounds with fireplaces and shelters, which can be reserved.

The park also boasts a tent campground which is open during the summer months too.

A fun, nature filled day out in one of North Carolina's popular state parks.
